Dizziness & Balance

Forty per cent of people over the age of 40 experience dizziness or balance problems at some point in their life. There are many causes for dizziness, but a large percentage is caused by an imbalance or loss within the inner ear or vestibular system. Our physical therapists treat patients with dizziness and balance problems of all causes.

Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular physiotherapy is a special area of physiotherapy helping people with vertigo, dizziness and balance problems.

What is the vestibular system?

The vestibular system is also known as the inner ear. Dizziness is a common reason for people to seek medical treatment and is often related to the vestibular system.

The Vestibular System is our body’s main balance system and allows our eyes to maintain focus as our body moves.

It can be damaged through injury or disease, often resulting in dizziness, vertigo, visual disturbance, and balance problems. When our Vestibular System is damaged the brain may no longer receive accurate information about motion and balance.

We understand it is not just “in your head”

A Vestibular Disorder is an invisible condition. This makes it hard explain to others what is going on because you appear “normal”, but symptoms can be life altering.

We understand that when you have an inner ear disorder getting to appointments can be a challenge:

  • the stress of asking for help
  • getting out of the house when you are not feeling well
  • traveling a long distance
  • the stress of traffic or just being in a car can all exacerbate symptoms

We prefer that you come into the clinic but we can also offer telehealth/video appointments or home visits.

We treat all types of vestibular disorders. Acute or chronic, if you have a diagnosis or not, we can help.

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specific form of physical therapy designed to decrease dizziness and improve balance disorders.
